Advanced Water Treatment

Description

The objective of this one-day course is to provide participants with training in advanced water treatment plant processes. This will be followed by a description and explanation of new and emerging water treatment technologies including advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) such as ozonation, hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet radiation. Granular activated carbon filtration and the four methods of membrane filtration: MF, UF, NF, and RO will also be described along with their purpose, operation, and effectiveness.

Opportunities for hands-on demonstration of treatment equipment such as membranes and ultraviolet disinfection will be included to maximize learning and retention. In addition, participants will work together to calculate the disinfection CT value for a hypothetical advanced oxidation treatment process.

What will be covered:

  • Conventional water treatment processes
  • Emerging water quality issues and advanced water treatment processes
  • AOPs: ozonation, ultraviolet radiation and hydrogen peroxide
  • Granular activated carbon filtration
  • Membrane filtration: MF, UF, NF, RO
  • Practical component will include:
    • Membrane filter
    • Ultraviolet radiation unit
    • Advanced oxidation disinfection CT calculation
